Civil Service Tosses Cannabis Testing For Some State Employees

Starting in October, people applying for certain positions in the state government will no longer need to worry about passing a drug test for marijuana after the state's Civil Service Commission got rid of pre-hire marijuana testing for non-test designated positions.

Three state entities that were sued Monday by the federal government over a department's alleged Americans with Disabilities Act violations have settled the matter within days of complaint's filing, court records show.

The U.S. Department of Justice sued the Michigan Civil Service Commission , the Department of Treasury and the Office of State Employer alleging that it had engaged in discriminatory employment policies and practices in violation of the act. It was filed on behalf of a complainant who worked for Treasury between 2004 and 2018. The complainant was said to have kidney disease throughout the course of her employment, being diagnosed in 2013 (See Gongwer Michigan Report, May 1, 2023).
